Beyond the Backsplash

We set out to rethink the expectations of utilitarian kitchens and create a system that evolves with a user’s mood and lifestyle. The design recognizes that aesthetic considerations have become equal in importance to the functional needs of spaces in which people gather to share meals, drinks, or simply good company.

A Fluid Note on Space

Nami takes its name from the Japanese word for wave, a nod to the design’s capacity for transformation and fluid movement. The island and cabinetry work together to create an interplay of material, form, and utility that equally supports contemporary open-plan concepts and the thoughtful conservation of space.

Where the Kitchen Takes Center

We approached the kitchen as an extension of the living space, rather than an ancillary or supportive place. Inspiration came from the shifting ocean tide and the way it alters a landscape over time. Nami’s ebb and flow, serving as both showcase and supportive design, allows the environment to adapt to the user’s evolving needs for space.

Never Shy, Never Loud

For Nami, we set out to create a kitchen that neither dictates the room nor disappears into the background. To achieve this, we designed a cabinet that reveals rather than conceals, infused with transformability and anchored by a sculptural work of art in the form of a center island that adds emotional depth to the overall design.

The Island That Moves You

Crafted in stone, Nami brings together workmanship, engineering, and design. The island draws inspiration from the Japanese kanji for wave, with a form that evokes the motion of the ocean. With an inviting and sculptural nature, it is a study of balance where one end is a different width than the other, creating a visual and spatial tension. Shaped like a boomerang, it brings people together, allowing the kitchen to flow from prep-work zone to social-gathering space.
