Necessity MOTHER OF INVENTION

When George and Glenn’s Amagansett beach home needed a sofa for the living space, time and curiosity pushed us beyond ideation into action. Although we were not keen on another modular sofa, It had to be configured to function within the space and support our flexibility needs.

Fluid Front to Back

Sofas are often so rigid; we wanted our piece to evoke fluidity, inspired by the movement of water and the rhythm of waves. All parts have been refined for comfort.  The back carries the same presence as the front, giving the sofa a clear sense of balance.  Surf is not only a sofa but a sculpture – considerate of how it presents from every side.

Drawing to Making

Surf grew out of a study in fluid movement, with each stage, spanning from drawing, carving, and engineering, unfolded as a collective effort. Watching the fabric being stretched gave better understanding to both the possibilities and the limitations of the design.
