An Urban Story

Moxy DTLA draws from the brand’s playful spirit and the cultural energy of downtown Los Angeles, where bold aesthetics meet boundless curiosity. Influenced by Moxy’s commitment to vibrant, experience-driven spaces, the design reinterprets the neighborhood as a destination in itself. The Moxy DTLA tells an independent story from the AC DTLA, amplifying its personality without competition.

Desert Nomad

Inspired by the freedom of an open road and the Easy Rider era, Moxy DTLA reflects the grit and allure of desert nomadism. An earth-tone palette captures the spirit of adventure and biker culture. Organic materials like leather, rammed earth, and wood interact with copper metals, while desert-inspired motifs ground the design to the rugged landscape.

Art as invitation

Developed in partnership with Hanabi: Art and Artists, the hotel lobby features a giant wire-mesh angel wing over the check-in desk, accompanied by a woven leather tapestry adorned with charms. Beyond, a pinball machine extends the brand’s playful spirit, inviting guests to engage with their surroundings.

Modular Design for Work & Play

The spatial planning supports Moxy’s philosophy by creating communal spaces that encourage connection and productivity, and by providing flexible environments that shift throughout the day. The Studios feature bespoke modular furniture that adapts from workspaces to meeting areas, evolving into a social lounge anchored by a custom DJ booth.

Two identities

The shared location of Moxy and AC DTLA create a dual hospitality model that optimizes available space while offering two different yet complementary guest experiences. Moxy introduces a social, expressive environment driven by art and community, while AC DTLA provides a refined, business-focused retreat.

"Move making and the California Dream are all mashed up together to create this atmosphere," George tells Dezeen. "We also captured the grittiness," added Glenn, "if you look at the materialities and colors and textures, it is kind of off-off, which makes it on,"
