Old and New Come Together

Nestled in London’s Fitzrovia neighborhood, The London EDITION reimagines the historic Berners Hotel through a dialogue between heritage and modernity, where Edwardian architecture meets the brand’s refined minimalism to create a quiet tension between tradition and contemporary design.

The result recalls the character of an English manor, reinterpreted with the ease and restraint of a modern gentleman’s club.

Defining The Times

True to EDITION’s core values and Ian Schrager’s Zeitgeist-driven vision of capturing the era's spirit, the lobby bar forms the social heart of the hotel. Its design merges modern elements, such as a blackened steel bar, with the building’s historic character, highlighted by an intricate coffered ceiling and marble columns.

An open floor plan encourages flow and connection, while lounge seating and a central fireplace create an atmosphere that invites guests to linger.

Artistic Intention

Art defines the atmosphere of the hotel, linking contemporary expression with historic character. In Berners Tavern, framed works fill the walls in a striking mix of modern art and classical composition, anchored by a polished Ingo Maurer egg suspended from the lobby ceiling.

Throughout the suites, pieces by Henrik Kerstens and furnishings by Christian Liaigre introduce moments of contrast, where playful form and material restraint meet in effortless balance.

Signature Elements Found

The project introduced design details that have since become signature to the EDITION brand, including electric green upholstery, textured throws, and an unexpected mix of art, culture, and curation. It also marked the establishment of The Punch Room within the EDITION vernacular—an intimate, wood-paneled lounge created in close collaboration with the brand’s entertainment team to align spatial design with the guest experience.

Moody lighting, fumed oak, and tufted English banquettes evoke the quintessential character of London’s private clubs, reimagined for a new era.

Room for Respite

The rooms offer a quiet retreat from the energy of the public spaces, defined by a balance of simplicity and warmth. Core elements such as bathroom fixtures and desks are offset by a nod to George Smith’s English style in wingback and tufted seating, while walnut wall panels and white oak floors introduce a sense of material richness. Bathrooms lined in white mosaic and polished fittings extend this calm sensibility, softening the pared-back style.

“Ian understands the zeitgeist [and] where things are going,” Glenn Pushelberg says of Schrager’s eclectic mixing of styles. “The guest rooms are refined,” says Pushelberg. “[The place] is not designed as a nightclub. That’s a stale notion of what a hotel should be.”
